Caro Sweet – Flight

Bronze, 74 x 62 x 47 cm

Caro recently became the Grand Prize Winner of Art Has No Borders latest competition: 101 Artworks featuring the Animal Kingdom. Unlike, some other open competitions which stage physical exhibitions, Art Has No Borders culminates in digital publications that are available to download to iPads and Macs on Apple’s iBooks. iArtBooks are an innovative way to get your artwork seen all over the world as iBooks currently distributes to 51 territories worldwide.

Caro’s sculptures attracted the judges eye because of their accomplished technique, the unusual abstraction of an animal subject matter and the striking visual image she is able to create with her material of bronze.

Artist of the Month: Julie Light

Julie Glass

Julie Glass

“I cast glass to make small sculptures at my studio in North West London.  Casting glass involves making moulds from models that I create in wax, clay, polystyrene and other materials and then heating the glass in a kiln so that it melts into the mould to take the shape of the original model.  I love working with glass as you can see the sculpture from the inside as well as the outside.  My pieces feature matt, satin and constructed textures set against polished panes and fluid forms juxtaposed with rigid geometry.  I aim to make glass that appears malleable and tactile as to draw in the viewer to look closer.

I have been casting glass for three years and so far most opportunities to show my work have come through submitting to open exhibitions.  As selectors often choose from photographs, the quality of the images has been the single most important thing to get right, making sure the piece looks its absolute best whilst ensuring it is an accurate representation of the work.  I have also tried to target exhibitions that have previously included pieces that are in keeping with the things that I create.  I am grateful that open exhibitions have given me the chance to have my work seen in prestigious venues such as Cork Street which otherwise would be well out of reach at this stage in my career!”

Artist of the Month: Simon Shepherd

Simon Shepherd

“As an artist working alone and not part of a group or collective, there can be times when doubt and uncertainty creep in.  Entering open competitions such as the Cork Street Open can be a good way of reaffirming the validity of your work by having it judged.  If successful, it can also provide an opportunity to exhibit work to a larger audience.

My advice would be to make sure you present your work in the best possible way, taking care to produce a clear and accurate photograph.  Also, not to get too disheartened by not being selected, I’m sure it happens to the best of us!”
